Painting the Frame (Inside and Out)

It is time to paint the inside of the frame.

I purchased four cans of this Eastwood Internal Frame Coating.  This stuff is supposed to protect the inside of the frame from any future rust.  All reviews online had nothing but good things to say about this stuff.

You can see that this coating comes with a long tube that allows you to fish it into the frame.  The tip of the tube sprays in a 360 degree spray.  It does a great job allowing you to get to all areas of the inside frame.

You can see the inside of the frame is now coated

This stuff makes a mess.  I still have to paint the outside of the frame, so I was not too worried about this over spray.

I know this is overkill, but I decided to take the opportunity to smooth out the frame from all the factory splash welds and other imperfections while I had the chance.  I new I would never have an opportunity to do this once it was painted.  I went through the whole frame with this sanding disk and also an angle die grinder and hit every single rough spot on the frame.

It is hard to see in this picture, but I finished sanding everything down and cleaning the frame up.

After cleaning the frame with some lacquer thinner I started brushing on Eastwood's
Rust Encapsulator.  I did a lot of research on what paint to use on this frame.  It is a little pricy, but I decided to use this Rust Encapsulator, then topcoat it with Eastwood's Extreme Chassis Black.  This frame should never rust once I am done.

Finished the front bumper

Started down the side.

Brushed a whole quart of the black Rust Encapsulator.  I then purchased an aerosol can of the stuff to help me get into the small little groves.  I bought it in red so that I could tell what was brushed on and what was sprayed.

I gave it a week to dry, then sanded down the whole frame with a scotch pad to prep it for the top coat.

Since I am always trying to over engineer everything, I thought it would be easier to throw together a paint booth for spraying the top coat rather than getting a friend to help me take the frame to the back yard every time I wanted to put a coat on the frame.  It did not take too long to put this together and was actually pretty cheap too.

I laid a drop cloth down on the ground.  I already learned that these work better than laying plastic on the ground.
I then used 8ft 1x2s for the frame of the booth.

I made sure that I left enough room for me to work around the frame.

I then threw plastic around the booth and staple gunned it to the 1x2.  After that I put some filters on both ends of the booth and attached a box fan to one end to act as an exhaust (not pictured).

I used a conventional spray gun and sprayed the first coat of Eastwood's Extreme Chassis Black on the frame.  Its amazing how much better it looks with the first coat on.  I plan to spray one more coat then I should be done with painting the frame.

Here is a video I took after the first coat was put on the frame.

  1. How many cans of the internal frame coating did this frame require?
